Calculating days outside US?

Hello,

 

I tried to search but couldn't find a thread addressing this question. 

 

I'm wondering how you calculate days outside the US? Do you include the days of departure and return in the total days or just the days that you are out of the country for a full 24 hours?

On our application, we calculated the days from the date we left the US and the date we returned.
