Timing SSN application

Hi all,

I arrive to the US (San Diego) next Monday Jan 23 on an L1-B visa. I'm interested in getting a SSN as soon as possible, to then be able to obtain a California driving license and buy a car.

I'd be grateful if you help me answer these questions:

1. How long should I wait to apply for a SSN following my arrival to the US? (some people have recommended to wait 1 week..)

2. Will I get a temporary SSN during the appointment at the Social Security Office, which allows me to apply for a driving license straight away? Or do I need to wait until I receive the SSN by post? How long does it usually take?

Many thanks,
Alejandro
