CHICAGO – A potential dream division clinching scenario didn’t quite pan out the way that Cubs fans might have wanted on Thursday evening.

At the end of the night, however, the goal was still accomplished.

With their Magic Number at 1 the team lost to the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 in front of a crowd at Wrigley Field ready to celebrate a National League Central Division Championship. But those fans got what they wanted a little later in the evening when the Giants beat the Cardinals 6-2 in San Francisco, mathematically eliminating St. Louis and giving the Cubs a division crown.

Because you are a Cubs fan and you know your heart will be broken in October? Again?

So sorry, did not realize you were in the the anti Cubs camp. I just like the phenom of fans who stand behind their losing team for years.

Loyal to the end! Knew folks in Scott AFB that were torn between STL and IL. But the Cards are the default team if you can't go with the Cubs.

What's this about? Never heard of either team.

The Chicago Cubs have a lineage in professional baseball that goes back to 1876. The club has won two series, back to back in 1908, 1909. Cubs fans are the longest suffering team without a Series win in over 100 years. They are the "Loveable Losers"

The rivalry between Cubs fans and St. Louis fans is baked into the cake:

A father and son are outside Wrigley Field, and the young son is asking his father to buy him a "Cardinals Suck" T-shirt. The father hesitates, but finally tells his son, "You can have the shirt if you promise never to say that word." "That's right," says the T-shirt vendor, wanting to make the sale. "'Suck' isn't a very nice word." "No," replies the father. "I meant the word 'Cardinals'."
