My Italian friends (whose father at one time actually worked in waste management  ) don't get all whiny about people making Sopranos jokes about them. Nor do my Russian friends, and Russians certainly get a lot of play as evil villains in various media. Why are some people more "off-limits" than others? Regardless, it's humour, meant in jest. It's like with Borat. The joke's not about "stupid people from Kazakhstan". It's about how so many stupid Americans fall for his ridiculous ######. Or Ali G-"Oh he's from England, that explains this odd behavior." Uh, no, not quite. You're being had. Only an ignorant idiot would fall for that stupid countdown rubbish. It's making fun of them, not Arabs. Which is kinda funny actually.

I just don't think we're there yet. Italian Americans can laugh at Sopranos jokes because most people *do* realize that not all Italian Americans are mafioso. I think there's a large number of people who really are frightened by the sight of arabic writing, seriously. I realize the joke isn't supposed to be saying all Arabs are terrorists, but I think it's pointing out a painful reality as opposed to a humorous one.

Agreed. I just want that ceiling broken.

Its been on here before, same reaction, some laugh some dont. Was it reported before? This subject is just a touchy one and not to be laughed at actually because of the circumstances involved. Although (we) all say and know not to ref all arabic to that, some will. thats the reason with such a group as ours it doesnt come across to good.

well said jenn. i cognitively understand what this link is trying to convey, but the current state of heightened/elevated fear we now live in, its in poor taste. as a family affected by someone who decided my husband did not belong in a power plant (his job!) i fail to see how we can joke, yet.

so your husband is an arab and you don't think he'd be offended by the fact that you're correlating arabic text to a supposed bomb? And we wonder why our security checks take so freakin' long.

Actually he is the one that forwarded it to me. It is a joke. Sorry your security checks take so long for some people, but what does that have to do with the joke posted? It was a question-but I really do not want an answer.

I dont get it? why the count down?

Supposed to be a bomb, Shonnie.

Chit! that is not funny or cute. . I soo reported that!

I ADORE. its not funny so knock it off..

Different people find different things that make them chukle. You find it not funny but I do.

maybe some people in me/na will remember that they felt it was not nice to be the brunt of a Joke the next time a round of anti-jew jokes come along...

maybe its one rule for some and another rule for others....

And the point of perpetuating the fear in this way would be....?

8-30-05 Met David at a restaurant in Germany

3-28-06 David 'officially' proposed

4-26-06 I-129F mailed

9-25-06 Interview: APPROVED!

10-16-06 Flt to US, POE Detroit

11-5-06 Married

7-2-07 Green card received

9-12-08 Filed for divorce

12-5-08 Court hearing - divorce final

A great marriage is not when the "perfect couple" comes together.

It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.

I've been involved in the MENA forum for over a year and have yet to stumble across an anti-Jew joke.

For the sake of clarity, do you say me/na because it's the category of the forum you are posting in? Because other than that, I fail to see any reason to specify any one group in particular. Deprecating Jewish jokes come from all over the planet. And some are quite amusing.
