Administrative processing for J1 renewal - always lengthy?

Hi,

I've had a bit of an unsettling turn in my application. It was sent via courier as the interview was waived for a J1 renewal, documents arrived at the embassy on Monday, was said to be "ready" for them to receive the application on Tuesday and then this morning the status changed to "administrative processing".

I'm pretty worried as I've of course read about this adding a lot of time onto the process, but I was wondering if anyone knows if either all visa applications go through this stage at some point and/or if it can actually be a quick process?

I've not received any communication from the embassy asking for documents or anything so I'm not sure what to do, and obviously I wasn't handed a 212 form as I didn't have an interview this time.

Thanks in advance,
Jen
