hi all i have become a citizen but and also changed my last name during the process.

i am now regretting getting rid of my original last name and thinking of adding it to my new name.

just for example i will use random name to illustrate what i am thinking of doing

current name: Joe John Smith

old name: Joe John Kent

now i am thinking of just adding my original last name to my current name without any hyphen like this

new name: Joe John Smith Kent

ok so to do so all i need to do is file the form in local civil court? (NYC)

and is there anything i would need to do as far as my naturalization certificate goes?

i havent applied for new passport yet which i hope to do after the name change dilemma.

any help is greatly appreciated.

anybody with some help on this?

to edit my first post i actually rather just change my name back to what it was before I changed it during citizenship process.

after I file the papers at civil court do I need to do anything to update my naturalization certificate?

how will I prove I am a citizen without one if my name won't match what is on the certificate?

You will use your naturalization certificate along with your new legal name change certificate to prove your citizenship. You can request a new naturalization certificate but it is expensive and unnecessary.

Once you have a new passport (obtained using the naturalization and name change certificates) you can use the passport as proof of citizenship.

My advice is that you get several official copies of the name change certificate from the courthouse.

if I want to get a state ID (NY) will they reject my naturalization certificate since it won't match my new(old) name?

will they accept it if I present the nake change certificate?

and how long can this processes take? (name change, new SS card, new passport)
