After Arizona’s Republican governor Jan Brewer announced her veto of the controversial SB 1062, conservatives around the country were very unhappy.

...

In a lengthy rant posted on Tea Party Nation’s website on Thursday morning, Phillips accused Brewer of buckling under pressure from “the left and the homosexual lobby” and condemning Arizona to a dystopian future in which LGBT people force God-fearing Arizona cake makers to provide them with ... sweets.

...

“The left and the homosexual lobby are both pushing slavery using the Orwellian concepts of ‘tolerance’ and ‘inclusiveness,’” he warns. He then levels one of the most damning criticisms possible in Republican circles, saying Brewer “proved she was no Ronald Reagan.”

...

“Should a devote [sic] baker be required to create a cake for a homosexual wedding ... or should a baker be required to create pastries for a homosexual wedding?” ... Phillips asks.

“Or should a photographer be required to photograph a homosexual wedding? ... Would they force a Jewish photographer to work a Klan or Nazi event? How about forcing a Muslim caterer to work a pork barbeque [sic] dinner?”

Ultimately, Phillips concludes, SB 1062 was never just about “the story of a cowardly governor who has no core beliefs.”

I love this sort of thing - everyone loves to use Orwell for their own purposes. Fewer people have actually read his books than reference them.

There's nothing 'Orwellian' about laws that prevent ignorant bigots from acting like jerkoffs. Orwell was talking about authoritarian control of ideas that threaten the power of the state, not the rights of some tosspiece baker to not sell cakes to gays.
