Hey there,

I'd really appreciate it if someone could give me some advice on this . I arrived in the US on a k1, we got married a few weeks back , and applied for an ssn with my married name , the major difference being that ,I added my husbands last name as mine & changed my middle name to an old family name in the process. The officer at the ssa assured me that since the middle name isnt considered as a legal name, it could be changed to anything, and so I did.

Since then I've been reading a lot of posts and information online stating that in order to change my middle name I will have to file a court order and that any changes in my name may cause a problem with the USCIS. I'm not sure of what to do right now , should I go back to the ssa and request them to revert to my maiden name?, a court order may take time and I want to file the aos immediately ,or Should I go ahead with my new name on the aos application & will it be okay if I provided a copy of the ssn with my new name on it as proof of the name change, Unfortunately my marriage certificate does not have my new name on it. Although the ssn didn't seem to have a problem accepting it as proof for the name change. I'd really be grateful if anyone could help me with this , Thankyou

I believe the complication has to do with why you have different names on different documents. The best thing you should have done would have been to use your new name on your marriage certificate as it is an official document for name changes. This is my personal opinion but I think it would be a bad idea to use your name name on the SSN since you won't be sending that in as evidence but instead - a birth certificate, passport and marriage certificate..and at least one of them would have to bear the new name. So best thing I would recommend is to use your name exactly as it is on your marriage certificate or birth certificate.

You can go to your county office and see if they can amend your marriage certificate to have your new name. If they can't, then you can start an official process of changing your name. The SSN alone does not qualify as an official name change document to USCIS since you won't even be sending it as proof in your application.

Yeah go to the county office and see if they can change that. My county does but not all counties do. Should your county not do the change, just file and afterwards. Go through an official name change later. It's more safer that way. Also regarding the SSN, just let them know which name you want to use and they will fix that right away. Good luck!
