Authenticating Documents at USEM

Hi everyone. Again.

I have an appointment next week to have a copy of my passport biographic page authenticated at the USEM next week for my husband's tax filing.

My questions are:

> How long does the entire procedure take? I'm guessing no more than an hour? Hopefully?

> Do I have to bring the photocopies with me already or will they be the one photocopying it?

> Will they accept a copy that has both my passport biographic page and tourist visa on it or do they have to be on separate pages?

W-7 Application

The Embassy Consular officers can authenticate originally signed birth certificates and marriage contracts issued by the Philippine National Statistics Office (NSO) in Quezon City, Philippines, after certification from Department of Foreign Affairs official (DFA) in support of applications for US taxpayer ID numbers, ITIN (W-7) application. Other documents required by the ITIN (W-7) may be certified by the issuing agency or official custodian of the original record.

Fee: $50(or its peso equivalent) per transaction (seal)

Note: Each additional seal provided at the same time in connection with the same transaction there is additional fee of $50.

Authentications

The primary purpose of an authentication, which is a governmental act by a U.S. consular officer, is to certify the official seal, signature and/ or authority of foreign officials who perform an official act with regard to a document that is to be used in the United States. As of December 11, 2006, U.S. consular officers will no longer authenticate the seals and signatures of any accredited Philippine notaries public. Also, the U.S. Embassy will no longer offer to the public a list of registered Philippine notaries public for whom the Embassy maintains such information. Only authentication requests for originally signed documents from key Department of Foreign Affairs officials will be authenticated.

A consular authentication of a document to be used in the U.S. in no way attests to the authenticity of the contents of a document but merely to the seal and signature of the issuing Philippine government official.

Yes thanks I've read that from the USEM site yesterday but it does not mention whether I should photocopy my passport ahead of time of they will do it there, how long the process takes from the time I arrive at the USEM to when I'll have the authenticated document on hand and if I can include both my passport and visa pages on a single page to save 50$

I am wondering if you need either one or both for the W-7.

Well on the instructions it said that the passport biographic page will be sufficient but on the form itself it asks for my visa category, visa number, expiration date and date of entry in the US. I imagine that my husband already filled out the w-7 for me and just needs me to sign it and provide proof of my being foreign.

Another question, do I need to have my passport authenticated/certified/"red ribboned" first before taking it to USEM?

Sorry to be asking all these questions here. I don't have a landline so I can't call them and emails are still unanswered. I have my appointment next thursday and I imagine I'll need time to have DFA authenticate my passport if necessary.
