My wife recently went to the DMV here in New York and was denied a non-driver's state ID. They said they could not give it to her because she needed a visa that was valid for at least 1 year. The K-1 is only valid for 3 months. She already has her SS card.

Now, because she can't get a state issued ID, the banks won't let her open an account. Has anyone on a K-1 been able to get a state ID from New York? Any advice here?

I can't help you with the bank except to try another bank.

NY DMV is brutal. You cannot get a DL or ID until you can prove that she's approved to be here for a year. Activate the AP (you get a one year stamp) or get the EAD approved, and then you can get the DL or ID.

I applied for a driving licence as soon as I arrived in NYC, but the DMV

wouldn't accept my K-1 without proof of marriage. So I got married

and went there again armed with a marriage ceritificate and - voilà! -

I got a learner permit. A couple of weeks (and a practical test) later,

I exchanged it for a full licence.

As for the bank, try Washington Mutual -- you only need a passport

to open an account (not even SSN), and it's 100% free.
