Transferring Money from UK to US

Just wondering if anyone has any advice on this?

I currently bank with Lloyds TSB in the UK and and would like to keep this account open when I leave for the US next month but take a large sum of money with me. I'm unsure who I will bank with yet in the US yet and of course don't have a bank account out there yet.

I don't particularly want to pay high transfer fees but do want to transfer it safely.

Any input would be great.

Do you have an active Paypal account?

My husband often paypals me some cash, which I then withdraw to my bank account so Im sure you can do the reverse?

I do have a paypal account and so does my fiance but is paypal ok to transfer thousands? Also I don't like the fact it takes a while to actually be able to be used if that makes sense.

This comes up every month or two. One example thread is here: Link

I used hifx.com to transfer cash, and others have used xe.com fine. You will need to provide them some scanned ID before you first use their services, though. Generally, the advice seems to be that high street banks will not get you quite as good a conversion rate as an online specialist.

My son sent me this recently. I plan to try it with a small amount at first.
