Mexico Cell Phone # change

For all of you who call Mexican Mobile #'s - you are probably aware of change made last night. Adding 1 after 52. Is anyone having trouble now calling their loved ones? I can't seem to get through with the new change. My fiance even has a mexican cell phone and an american cell phone that I just have to dial a local # to get him. Neither are working today. Anyone else having problems?

He can call me though and I can text him. So I guess I will just wait a few days to see if they work out the problem. He has Movistar and then US phone is Verizon.

Hi Allie - I haven't tried his cell phone yet but I heard about the change. I'm not surprised that it's a mess! BTW, did you know you can text to his Movistar phone from online? He has to set it up first but it's convenient.

Just got some updated info if anyone is reading this post. Not good news with American cell phones in Mexico. According to Verizon, Mexico has suspended all non-Mexican mobile phones in Mexico until they get internal issues with the new dialing format figured out.

I will make a note however that my fiance can call me for about 10 seconds on the USA phone but then we get cut off.

He has Movistar for his Mexican cell phone and he is able to call me however I can't call him. Movistar advised they should have that problem fixed in 2 weeks.

So looks like calling our loved ones in Mexico (unless you call landline) is going to really be hard over the next couple of weeks. :crying:

Sort of off topic....I read in Sunday's Sacramento Bee that effective on Sunday there is an additional 14 cents a minute charged to the out of Mexico cell or land line that calls a Mexican cell phone. John

Makes sense - the change is so the out-of-the-country caller pays rather than the recipient - el que llama, paga.

Hey Kk,

So I'm pissed about the verizon phone in Mexico. I just signed up with Verizon on North American plan end of Sept and gave Leo phone while I was there the 2 weeks. So I got my bill today and I noticed .69 charges on there for calls while I was in Mexico and on Leo's America phone. So I called Verizon. The sales rep gave me some wrong info when I bought phone. Apparently not all cities in Mexico are covered under North America plan. Leo is in one of those cities. The sales rep didn't know about this coverage gap when I signed up. So his USA phone in Mexico is really useless now b/c it is .69 per minute for making or receiving calls. The sales guy is going to credit my account though. Just pissed. I might have to look into that vonage thing if Leo has to stay too much longer in Mexico. I'm glad Movistar is up and running again. Oh yeah, verizon didn't charge me for text messaging to Mexico - I guess that is a plus. I won't be mentioning that to them. I can still call Leo to his Movistar phone though without any extra cost.

Just venting.

Allie

I have the Verizon North America Choice plan. I have one phone here in LA and my wife has the other family plan phone in Tijuana. The phone went screwey on Saturday while they "reset the towers" and was back to normal on Sunday. I drove to the border to pick up the American signal to call 611 to get the story. Verizon says they will honor the contract for it's duration and I wont be charged the 14 cents per minute when I call into Mexico. I am concerned that people calling me while I am in Mexico on the weekends will get charged more. I'll have to see how it goes.

With the North America Choice plan I can use my phone here in the US to call anywhere into Mexico with my included minutes. While in Mexico in certain cities (most all border areas, big central cities, not Sinaloa when visiting my inlaws) I can use my phone like normal, no extra charge.

The down side is that night and weekend minutes are limited to 1,000 minutes and the "In" minutes are limited to 1,000 minutes. With my 4,000 minute plan I am limited to 6,000 minutes total. Sounds like a lot but they go fast with a long distance relationship and work calls too. When calling from my cell phone to her's it basically eats the minutes double. But for roughly $250 a month I beats calling cards :-)

Hi Mike

Thanks for responding. Leo lives in Puerto Penasco - not a major city so unforunately North America plan won't work for making calls from Mexico. (which I just found out yesterday) Verizon guy explained if phone says extended network and triangle is flashing - you are good to go. If it says roaming and has a solid triangle then you will be charged the .69 for either making/receiving calls. Since Verizon sales rep didn't know this and told me wrong when I bought phone he is going to credit my account for those charges - probably about $250. We were hoping to save a little money on cell phone bills between the two of us with the Family plan but I guess now back to drawing board. But I guess if Movistar doesn't charge him anymore for incoming USA calls and just used against minutes and me calling him is just used against my minutes - we might be okay. We will see how it goes over the next month. Hopefully Leo will be here soon so we don't have to deal with phone issues anymore. It is so very aggravating.

Or Skype. Skype to Skype is totally free. Skype out to a landline is .021/minute. These days it's no good for cell phones since they changed the calling system and now it costs way too much.
