I sent in my N400 application on July 6th 2012, had my fingerprints done in August, had my interview in September. The immigration officer said she needed to look into a few things before she could determine if I was eligible for citizenship (due to me going back to England for college a few years ago). The officer said she would call me and let me know. when the officer called me she asked me for a letter from the courts back in England from when my name changed due to my mother marrying my step father while I was a child and my last name changing to that of my step father. The officer already had in her possesion a copy of a letter written by my biological father stating that he allowed my mother to change my name. I explained to the Officer that I do not have any other paperwork from this as the court didn't issue anything related to my name change (I was 13 when my name changed and all of my legal paperwork, ID etc is in the new name). The Officer said that it was fine and that she would put through the paperwork as approved for my application. That was on the 27th of September. On my case status when I check it, it says on September 27th we recieved you're response to our request for evidence and to expect an update or decision within 60 days.

Well 60 days has past and I tried calling the USCIS help line and they told me they can't do anything to help me because my case is still within normal processing time. Is this normal? What can I do? I'm worried that the officer is waiting for something that I don't know of.

They have 120 days after the interview to reach a decision. Most likely it is in some stack waiting for approval. If your local USCIS office is nearby and if you have time, you can schedule an infopass appointment and talk to an agent in person about your case.

Thank you very much for your help. I'll try and schedule an infopass. It's just annoying when you read that you should expect a decision or update within 60 days to be told by customer service that that basically apparently doesn't mean anything.
