I would think it would be the other way around. It would make more sense for the Republicans to dilute the minority vote, rather that give them "safe" districts.

Not in a state where there are more Democrats than Republicans. The only way to stay in power for Republicans in a state like Florida is for them to draw a few districts that will vote 85% or better Democrat and then have districts where the fewer Republicans still constitute the majority. It's how they do it.

Amazing if true, and something that reverses what Democrats have been using the courts to do since the passage of the Voting Rights Act.

Oh, Democrats did the same thing the other way around in Florida for a long, long time. And they're still doing it where they can. Parties will gerrymander as long as they can. It's how they stay at the wheel.
