As for the point I made - it's actually quite accurate. We are looking at a $1.2TN deficit vis-à-vis roughly $1.3TN in spending through the tax code - a.k.a. tax expenditures. Stop spending through the tax code and the budget deficit is gone.

How can that be, if current law, i.e., the CBO baseline budget for 2013, assumes the Obama extension of the tax cuts will expire on Janunary 1st and we will have a $1.3T deficit for 2013?

Is your mortgage interest deduction a tax loophole? How about Earned Income Tax Credit? Federal credit for electric cars?
