Call the embassy for an extension?

The deadline for my fiance to schedule his interview is August 4th and I am afraid we won't have all the paperwork together in time. Do we just call the embassy for an extension? Does my fiance have to call or can I call for him? I don't think we will need a long time, maybe just a few days.

Wow! that sounds like your are pressed for time... my question is as to which paperwork specifically do you not have?
