Hi!

My boyfriend (US citizen) and I (Canadian) just got engaged.

We want to figure out which is the best Visa for us... I read the guide that compares the different visas but it didn't help me determine which one would be best. I couldn't find a flowchart (ie. like the one for the K1 visa) for the IR1/CR1 which would be helpful.

I am leaning towards the IR1/CR1 as it would mean I could work right away and there are less steps than in the K1.

Here are some things that are unclear to me:

-While I am waiting to get my paperwork to cross into the US & become a LPR, am I allowed to enter the US as a visitor? Would my fiance be able to visit me in Canada?

-What are some of the common difficulties and frustrations couples endure with this visa?

Sorry if there are already answers to these questions, I am just a little overwhelmed with all the information / terms I don't understand (yet) etc.

Thanks,

Allie

The visit question is actually one of the more common ones in the Canada Forum. Forums <scroll down> General Discussion Area -> Regional -> Canada.

It is possible to get turned away at the border if you don't bring proof of ties to Canada i.e. lease, letter from employer, etc and even if you do. There is some good advice in the Canada forum from people who have been turned away and from people who haven't who give hints on what they brought with them.

Swing over to the Canada forum and check it out. It will give you a better idea of what to expect at the border, with the embassy, and all the other issues that come up that are Canada related.

And last but not least, Welcome to VJ :)
