I have F-1 status but want to leave USA next summer (for a long time, maybe for some years). I want to travel around the USA and do not want to go to school just to maintain F-1 status. In the same time I do not want to leave USA before next summer. What is the best for me? Do I have to try to change my status to B-2? And what if I get denial changing my status to B-2, will I keep my F-1 status if I continue attending school? Do I have any other options? Thank you.

Why not just go to Canada/Mexico (or home) during your 60 days grace and come back on VWP? I don't know where you're from, so I don't know if you're from a VWP country.

Otherwise, it is possible to COS to B-2, but it's not very common. Be sure to file it very soon after you enter your 60 days.
