Hello to Everyone,

My Fiancee and I have decided to get married in Sao Paulo, Brasil this year. I have all my needed documents translated and certified by the Brazilian Consulate in NYC, they are with my fiancee in brasil. I want to know if there is a way for her to Mark/set the date of our civil wedding in brasil with out me being present. As much as I would love to set the date with her and stay until the wedding date I cannot. The lawyer that is aiding us in brasil has told me i could grant her power of attorney and my fiancee could mark the date by herself without me being present, then all I would have to do is show up for the wedding. Does anyone have any information about this or if its even possible? How do I go about doing this?

Thanks and God Bless

Bryan

It is to our knowledge that both of you have to be present to obtain the marriage license at the civil registry office (Cartório de Regístro Civil). To do this you will need your passport, original birth certificate, and Declaration of Civil Status issued by the local Consulate or Embassy (the declaration of civil status is valid for ninety days). Then you must wait about 30 days to receive the license. Sometimes as quick as 20 and sometimes as long as 60 (remember, this is Brazil). If either have been married before, you must have a certified copy of your divorce decree.

I would be very careful about the lawyer telling you that she can sign for you.

I hope everything works out the way you want it. But it has been my experience while making 5 trips to Sao Paulo to see my sweetie, that nothing goes as planned there. It can be very frustrating to those of us that are not use to dealing with their system. But we seemed to always work things out even if it took us a little longer to get it done.

Boa Sorte.....
