Well to be honest - its not a big endorsement of the country and that sort of humour doesn't usually work when the prime minister (representative of the nation) is giving ringing endorsement of a bald stereotype, that relegates his people to the level of superstitious peasant-folk. Even if HE finds it funny, he can't say so.

We know with the way people react towards, cracks about GWB's intelligence (and as you said, portraying him as a monkey), or allegedly "anti-american" comments by celebrities that many folks take these things way too seriously.

The negative stereotypes of Americans I try to disprove when I travel. Believe it or not. I really don't care if someone wants to badmouth GWB. Because it's all part of the democratic process.
