All for our protection eh?

Seems to me that this cross quite a few ethical lines, not to mention setting down the foundation stone of a future dictatorship.

I cannot imagine Congress, not to mention the Supreme Court approving this.

A draft Bush administration plan for special military courts seeks to expand the reach and authority of such "commissions" to include trials, for the first time, of people who are not members of al-Qaeda or the Taliban and are not directly involved in acts of international terrorism, according to officials familiar with the proposal.

The plan, which would replace a military trial system ruled illegal by the Supreme Court in June, would also allow the secretary of defense to add crimes at will to those under the military court's jurisdiction. The two provisions would be likely to put more individuals than previously expected before military juries, officials and independent experts said.

The draft proposed legislation, set to be discussed at two Senate hearings today, is controversial inside and outside the administration because defendants would be denied many protections guaranteed by the civilian and traditional military criminal justice systems.

If the Supreme Court slapped down the other, don't see this plan going anywhere.

Lets hope so. Still it's an indication of why people should be extremely suspicious over the government's handling of the "war on terror", and that more accountability, not less is clearly needed.

It'd be nice if the Supreme Court would make an official ruling regarding the "war on terror" as being a misnomer. It would be relevant in the sense that any future actions taken by the Bush Administration could not use that term anymore since it is an implausible term.

It is - chalk that one up to Bush. The illiterate arsehole has coined a term that is vague and grammatically incorrect. The least of his sins unfortunately ;)

Would you rather see foreign terrorists being protect unde US civil laws? I wouldn't want to give the ACLU a smell of this or they would be camped at the door of the courthouse, willing to defend the rights of these poor innocent terrorists..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Based on this if the ACLU does get involved, it won't be to 'protect' terrorists, but to stand up for everyone else. Did you actually read the article?

YES, It is called enabling the authorities with the correct tools and laws to allow them to complete the job at hand, aka protecting America.

I am amazed at how law enforcement actually ever gets anything done in the US, considering all of the BS red tape and the infamous ACLU checks they have to go through. Once again most other developed 1st world nations do not have the same issues..

Interesting that you mention this is somehow typical in other "1st world nations", as the proposal sounds rather "3rd world" to me.
