Need to get SS card

My bride came from Canada to the US at the end of March. We were married on March 30th on the beach! She filled out the papers to get her Social Security card for herself and her daughters. She was told by the SS office that now that she is married she can not get the card here in Indiana. She will have to contact the INS to get a card and that her 9 year old daughter can not get a card until she is old enough to work! Has anyone had any experience with this? I can not put them on my insurance at work until they have Social Security numbers. I am at a loss as to what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could the governments make this any harder??

Thanks!

Eric

That is totally bogus. After I got married I applied and got my SSC within a few weeks!

I would go back and ask to speak to a manager or go to another office. I have seen sometimes that the office required the green card or the EAD card to get the SSC but she should be able to get one and you do not have to contact INS to get one. They have nothing to do with SSC!

that is complete BS. i got married within 4 days of my poe, got my marriage certificate within 2 weeks and then applied for my ssn and had that within 2 weeks. take a look at the guide to getting an ssn, there is an informative letter you can print out and bring with you stating that k1 visa holders are allowed to get an ssn even before GC etc. and that you can get it in your married name with the marriage certificate. definitely talk to someone higher up. the only issue you may have is if she is not in the SAVE database, if that is the case wait another 2 weeks and go back. otherwise they will have to verify it manually which could take forever.
