Hello

I filed the paperwork a couple months ago and I thought everything was correct.

I just came back from Jamaica and we needed to get new birth certs for her to get her passport. Anyways her middle name is spelled differently on her birth cert than what I put on the form. Her old birth cert was hand written and hard to read, and I spelled her name the way she always spelled it. But it is not correct.

Is this a big problem? what do I have to do? Should I send a letter with my case number and the correct spelling of her middle name?

I would be inclined to contact the people who have issued the new birth certificate and clarify WHERE they got the spelling from. If your fiancee spells her name a certain way, that is more likely to be correct than a translation from a difficult-to-read prior version. However, a birth certificate is a primary identification document and one would expect it to be accurate. It may not provide issues, but why take the risk with such an important document?

The problem with that is everything moves so slow in Jamaica. It is taking her over months just to get her ID card so she can get her passport. We would rather just deal with the new spelling and hope everything goes through. It would probably take them another 6 months to correct it.

We're hoping her ID comes in time so it does not delay the visa. the passport should only take 1-2 weeks once it is there.

Hi mortaskuld :)

How much difference is there in the name you put on the form and the one on her birth certificate??

Dealing with the RGD is a nightmare! It took us 5 MONTHS to get the non-impediment form from them! :bonk:

I would agree it is better to go with the spelling on the birth certificate she has in hand.

I remember one of the older yardies having a miss-spelled middle name and it was not a problem for them.... I will try to find that thread.

Thanks for the reply JAPrincess

Her middle name is spelled Demishia on her birth cert, and we spelled it Dimesha on the forms.

Also the same problem with her kids middle name.. It is Micka and on the forms it is spelled Mieka.

she emailed me some pictures of her birth certs (not copies, she does not have a scanner) and I'm thinking of sending those in with the case number and see if they can fix it for me.

Does that sounds good? or will I be ok?

I have been searching for that old thread and can't find it.

My gut tells me that it will be okay, and that you can correct it with USCIS or NVC or even the Embassy before they issue a visa with the wrong name...

But who wants to go on my gut eh?

I am going to call on some other yardies to come help, maybe they have more information.

Try not to stress, we'll figure it out!

I am not sure if a picture of the birth certificate would be enough for USCIS...

Which parish is your fiancée in? There are places to get the BC scanned so that she can send it to you in a format you can print and send to USCIS.

If I were you I would contact USCIS @ 1 (800) 375-5283 and tell them what happened and ask them what should be done.
