The power of EDSA

MANILA, Philippines – People Power. Velvet Revolution, Czech Republic. Jasmine Revolution, Tunisia. Egypt. Bahrain. Yemen. Libya. What a way to remember EDSA I, 25 years later, from Aquino to Aquino.

The silver anniversary bash on Friday – “No one throws a party like us!” in the words of Tony Gonzalez of the EDSA People Power Commission – will roll out brand-new stuff. A statue of Cardinal Sin. The expected attendance of the breakaway (in more ways than one) hero, Juan Ponce Enrile. A plaque marking the spot “where Cory stood, at the POEA building.” On exhibit, four Army tanks, the same ones that the people, including nuns, stopped in their tracks with their arms outstretched offering the soldiers flowers and rosaries.

Mandy Navasero, a true EDSA veteran, took some of the most memorable photos of those tanks which, according to EPPC chairman Maria Montelibano, were bigger, heavier, louder and meaner than the present crop.

Feb. 25 has not been declared a holiday but three lanes of EDSA will stay open. Throughout the day, the voices of Cardinal Sin, Butz Aquino and other personalities calling on the people to show their power en masse at EDSA will be played from loudspeakers mounted at the celebration site. Passersby are forewarned: This is a recording.

This is not a new revolution.
