When I was in Germany, a big chunk of my gross pay went for my health care. At least 14% of gross pay.

Really? The cost for health insurance was in the range of 14% total split between the employer and employee at a 50/50 ratio back when. I know that it's more like 55/45 in favor of the employer now and a bit over 14% to boot (cost is still higher in the US, by the way) but at no point did any employee in Germany pony up 14% of gross pay for health insurance. That's just not true.

Actually it was 2006 when gasoline was $2 somethin' that Nancy Pelosi told us how congress would lower the price of gasoline if we elected Dems. The only way congress can affect it is to take off the tax. Are you going to hold your breath? Me neither.

The Repubs will do nothing either though, just for the record.

The Dems tried to defund the war every 3 months when Bush was President. Unemployment was horrible at 7% when Bush was President. Now 10% is the "new normal" and it is only THAT low because so many people have run out of benefits. Insurance premiums are skyrocketing (which I think was the plan all along anyway to promote single payor health insurance)

The problem is the usual...people depending on GOVERNMENT for "solutions" when they are their own best solution to whatever "problem" they have.

Actually it was August 2001 when gasoline was under $1.40 per gallon. Guess what happened immediately after the attacks?

And it was when Katrina was brewing in 2005 that gas headed over $3.00 per gallon.

Disasters both natural and political are now how fuel is priced.

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.

Not just disasters but a growing demand globally for the finite resource also takes it's toll. Along with commodity speculation, of course. As the economy rebounds globally, there will be more demad for oil. So the price goes up. The best and really the only way to cope with inevitably rising oil and gas prices is to use less of it. Double the fuel efficiency of the car you drive and you won't sweat rising gas prices all that much. Make more use of other energy sources and you drive down demand and hence the price of oil. Why do you think the fossil fuel industry fights tooth and nail against alternative energy sources? Yes, because it cuts into their bottom lines.

yup

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senator Barack Obama
Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt
