Man wanted in Juarez murders arrested in Denver

By Ivan Moreno, Associated Press

August 17, 2006

Authorities on Tuesday arrested a Mexican man in Denver believed to be part of a group responsible for raping and killing at least 10 women from 1993 to 2003 in the border city of Ciudad Juarez Mexico.

The U.S. Marshals Service and the Department of Homeland Security-Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Denver arrested Edgar Alvarez Cruz on an immigration violation.

Though authorities said Alvarez Cruz is suspected of being part of a gang that killed at least 10 women, his arrest can help solve the deaths of hundreds of women in Ciudad Juarez, said Antonio O. Garza Jr., U.S. embassador to Mexico.

"The arrest of Edgar Alvarez Cruz in Denver is a very important step towards solving several of these horrific crimes," he said in a statement.

Many of the women killed were later found in the Juarez desert, a city that borders El Paso.

Alvarez Cruz’ arrest will "ultimately bring their killers to justice," Garza said.

The Associated Press reported that Mexico’s Attorney General, Daniel Cabeza de Vaca, said Cruz was being investigated when he fled the country.

"We don’t exactly how many homicides he may have been responsible for, but there is solid evidence in several cases we know of," Cabeza de Vaca told the AP.

Mexican authorities gave information to the U.S. Marshals who were then able to track Alvarez Cruz in Denver. He is being transferred to a U.S. federal facility in El Paso and is expected to be turned over to Mexican authorities today.

Nah, as long as they're rich and white and pretty, they can be older, too. Natalie Holloway ring a bell? She made the front pages time and again while others may only make it to page 5 or never make it into the papers at all. Wonder why? I don't.

I'm so glad to hear this. It's a huge deal! Hopefully he is actually one of the people involved in the murders and can lead to more arrests. This whole situation is just so sad and all the families of those murdered girls deserve justice and women in Juarez deserve to feel safe again.
