Hi All,

We haven’t even yet applied for our petition yet, but I can understand all of your concerns. Will apply from New Delhi - I had to get my passport renewed and I was asked for a bribe by the policeman who came home to check up on me even though this is my own place for the past 12 years and I had all my papers in order.

Thankfully the local Station head is a far-off relative and I just complained to him and he got it done in a jiffy. I just talked to my uncle again regarding Christina's question and he advised it is best to just find someone who knows somebody there in the station and pay the bribe to get it done, or find out who is responsible, take him aside and pay him to get it done. If they agree, it really shouldn’t be more than a half-hour job to get it ready.

This reminds me that I would have to go to Mumbai and get a certificate for the 2 yrs I was there - what a pain!

Would love to stay in touch with all of you going through New Delhi....how about starting a new topic or staying in this one for it?

Christina -- if these guys are making fun of the name and things of this nature, they want money (yes, a bribe). As Delhiguy suggested, get one of these goons to the side, stroke his ego a little bit (saying that he is the only one who can get it done) and then ask him what is and how much is required to get it done. Jatin will know how to bribe them as he lives in India <grin>.

Delhiguy -- welcome to the forum. We have a thread on the Embassy forum "calling everyone from delhi/mumbai/chennai" where us fellow desis are hanging around :-). I'll post on that thread to bring it up on the radar again.

Cheers,

KP

I was just talking to my fiance today and he was telling me about how he will just pay the bribe and get it done quickly. He says not to worry because in India anything can be done with enough money. LOL As a non-desi I just laugh and say that the same can be done here but it only costs more! LOL :jest:

He is still waiting on Packet 3 to arrive. But we are working on the rest of the papers needed. Our goal is to have him here by the end of November for my birthday. :P

I am getting mine done through New Delhi. But due to the fact that I am a British national, the police report from India had to be provided by the FRRO... I was asked for a huge bribe by an FRRO officer in Bombay. I refused to pay it... just used some contacts in the Ministry to complain about the chap... and I got the Bombay report pronto.

I will be submitting documents required for the section 221 (g) towards the end of the week... but as far as the interview I had back in June - well the CO was extremely polite. My interview was conducted in English but they do ask if people want the interview to be conducted in Hindi etc... If I recall correctly it took about 2 hours in toto (in addition to the hour you wait outside).

Paul and I met on the Bazaar on the 14th January (he joined my progressive rock forum that day)

July 3rd he flew to England to meet me

We fell in love while he drove all over the place coz I cannot read maps (we were supposed to go to Ingleton - but touched Darlington 4 times, Pierce Bridge 6 times, Scotch Corner twice and Bernard Castle twice and we never did make it to Ingleton)

It has been so long and so much has happened in between...

Arrived in Houston on October 29th 2006

Married 17th November 2006

Lost my father 8th January 2007 (all dates are a blur after this)

This is awesome -- I think we should post a "rate sheet" for bribes in India based on locales  Maybe have the name of the "bribee" next to the rate and the time which he takes (it's generally a male - not being sexiest) :D

I was asked for 15 thousand rupees. I did not pay it. I met someone from the home munustry (a deputy secretary) in connection with the Delhi FRRO report and mentioned what the Bombay chap had asked me for... well by the end of the day the Bombay chap was calling to beg me not to proceed further with the complaint as he had been suspended from duty... the chap I had met was in charge of the Foreigner's Division... and we got on famously... I just do not like the idea of paying someone to do their job... I have never paid a bribe till date... and gravely doubt that I ever will.

Melo -- you are indeed a woman of principles and are also connected. I personally visit India for a few days and don't want to take "panga" and ruin my vacation and so I roll over and say &*^%& it. I guess if I lived in India for an extended period of time, I would probably do the same thing as you.

Kudos for kicking that guy in the twins for asking for a bribe :-)
