My wife has her interview scheduled in Chennai on October 14th...how soon afterwards will she be able to return to the US? I realize that it varies from case to case, but I'm trying to get a rough idea of what we can expect for the interview, and whether we find out the result immediately. What are the kinds of factors that would delay getting a response back from the consulate? And more importantly what are they looking for in the interview to grant her the visa?

I was planning on booking tickets for her around November 7th, so that allows about 2-3 weeks. Is that enough time? We've had to wait so long for this visa processing. We started the application in February, and waiting 9 months just seems like so long. Granted, having our police certificates, and getting documents to and from the US faster (Indian postal service is quite slow) would have helped.

Pras..my case was completed on 31st Aug and awaiting interview date. What I hear is that for ladies, there will not be much delay even if they r put in AP. But again like you know, we can never be sure.

Btw, when did you get the interview date? I am still waiting for mine. I see your case was completed 3 days ahead of mine.

I got the interview date on 27 August - that was the day I got the mail from NVC saying that the scheduled date is Oct 14. I kept calling trying to find out how the processing was going and they couldn't give me any specific information. Then all of a sudden, one day I got the e-mail saying that the interview date was scheduled.

My guess is that the operators on the phone really don't have any information on how the processing is going. They just give a rough figure, like it will take 6-8 weeks. Then when whoever handles the processing at NVC completes your case, the data is entered into the system and the e-mail is generated to the address on file.

Now of course it would be nice if you could directly talk to the people at NVC who are actually looking at your case, but that would probably slow down processing even more, and would maybe take an extra few months! So unfortunately you're in the dark until you get the e-mail from NVC saying you're missing documents, or that your case is complete.
