Certainly one is drawn to the conclusion that men who use prostitutes see the women who do that sort of work as different to the type of women they want in their families. I'll throw another one out there, how many men who think paying for sex is fine and dandy would marry a prostitute? If not, why not?

FWIW there are men on VJ who have. There is a thriving "bar girl" culture in SE Asia and if you search around you'll find many posts by male petitioners asking about how (if at all) a past employment record as a "bar girl" might impact their petition and subsequent application (if allowed).

Ah, the gigolo - interestingly, I don't think there is the same stigma against the gigolo as there is against women who have sex for favours - it's interesting that there is a distinction between those who choose their 'johns' and those who take all comers.

I think to answer that question honestly, the guys would have to examine their own attitudes towards women. If they truly do respect the women who provide the services, the only logical answer to the question is "yes, I would marry a prostitute".

Is a 'bar girl' a genuine prostitute or more of one those girls who is paid to get men to buy her drinks in order to increase bar profits and who sometimes chooses to sleep with one of the customers? I'm pretty ignorant on SE Asia 'bar girl' culture.

It's pretty notorious.

Before I moved back I saw a reality tv program about a group of students who volunteered to work menial food production jobs in Thailand. Backbreaking work for pennies a day. What they found was that a lot of the women who end up working in sex clubs are originally factory and plantation workers from deprived rural areas who end up turning to prostitution because they don't earn enough money to support their families.

What was interesting is that the students had a verbal confrontation with an American sex tourist in Bangkok and the guy would not accept that the women he was trying to procure weren't there for any other reason than that they liked it. Tells you a lot about the mentality of some people.
