There are scholarships out there based on financial need, regardless of color.

THIS is the question you were asked.

Do those that are white and poor quality for Affirmative Action?

THIS was your answer

'Under certain circumstances, theoretically - yes.'

give an example please.

The other day I realized how racist and blind people have become with the following ad airing for black history month: "Black is beautiful, black is powerful, black is smart, black is unique". Mate, if that is not racism, I honestly don't know what is.

Come one dude. Affirmative Actions is racism at its finest.

Australia has affirmative action as well:

Anti-discrimination laws in Australia exist at both federal and state

levels of government. At the federal level, separate legislation is in place

for race and gender discrimination ( Racial Discrimination Act 1975; Sex

Discrimination Act 1984). Some states have no legislation of their own,

while others have legislation that proscribes discrimination on a range of

criteria including race, sex, disability, marital status, and homosexuality

(Ronalds1987).

In contrast to the United States, affirmative action programs in Austra-

lia rise out of a special piece of federal legislation that is independent of

the anti-discrimination laws, the Affirmative Action (Equal Employment

Opportunity for Women) Act ( 1986). This legislation mandates the setting up of affirmative action programs in larger workplaces to remove

barriers to women's equal participation in the workforce. Unlike the

United States, the legislation for affirmative action programs focuses on

gender and was developed against the backdrop of Australia's ratification

of the International Labor Organization Convention 111, Discrimination

(Employment and Occupation) ( 1958) and the United Nations Conven

tion on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women.

The regulatory apparatus that exists for countering discrimination in

Australia is less adversarial than in the United States ( Grabosky and

Braithwaite 1993). The philosophy rests on negotiation and conciliation

as the main method of resolving problems, with a quasi-judicial tribunal

to inquire into individual complaints that can't be resolved during the

conciliation process ( Ronalds 1987). In relation to gender equality, change

is occurring, albeit slowly. In the last decade, the female labor force has

increased at about twice the rate of the male workforce, 30% compared

with 14%, with women more likely to hold part-time jobs and more than

one job (Australian Bureau of Statistics1997). In 1980, Australia had the

highest index of occupational segregation of twelve OECD countries

(Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development1980).

Is that how you guys see the majority of black people in America? Just pathetic people who stick their hands out for the crumbs off the white man's table and endless demands to be treated better than white people?

I do think there is room to update and modernise affirmative action programs, but this attitude that this is how black people are is really mind numbing.

You missed the point all together MC. The point was by giving black people handouts because there black implies that they need help and cant help themselves. So I guess you could say that people who support affirmative action have that sort of mind frame your complaining about but wait you support affirmitive action...hmm

Um, are you for real BY? Mexicans were treated like ###### in California with USC's who happened to 'look mexican' being deported like cattle in 'ethnic cleansing' roundups.

Honey then why don't you start paying for all the mess your ancestors caused around the world, including restitution for sending Aussies to to be tortured to death in a harsh desert country.

It's amazing to me that you will bring up history and pretty much say anything and everything to defend minorities, yet also condemn any and every negative attribute associate with either of the two groups.

people with disabilities are covered under affirmative action, they don't have to be poor, or of any color (ie: includes caucasians)

Why do you guys play dumb? Are poor Caucasians or Asians allowed to enter college in a similar fashion to that of black and Hispanic Americans covered under Affirmative Action? It's a yes or no answer.

Theoretical - meaning that it in theory, it is possible. Whether there are current situations where it has happened? I don't know. However, if you read and understood the wording of Affirmative Action, you would see that it isn't specific to any particular race, gender, or sexual orientation.

Australia has affirmative action as well:

Aborigines are a different story, as they are at a huge disadvantage. Comparing black Americans to their situation is disingenuous.

If you said to me that some from Haiti should be able to apply for AA, I would agree. Black American should have zero priority over any other race in similar socioeconomic circumstances. period.

what are you really trying to get at here?

Second part of post 97 should clarify that for you.

You see no benefit in helping the underprivileged?

I do but the underprivileged come in every race and color. We should focus on things like kids who grow up in drug infested neighborhoods rather it be the ghetto or the trailer park.

Yes...because they are underrepresented in the field. That's how these programs work and that is their purpose. So if by chance, you happened to be underrepresented in a field that you wanted to pursue, there may be an organization willing to help you.

I think the nursing field should be represented by qualified nurses regardless to the sex of the individual.

I think what Mike is trying to say is that how come someone can't be disadvantage for being White? Theoretically, it is possible but the conditions and circumstances would have to demonstrate that.
