I can't believe that so many here are not aware of the number of private scholarships out there with certain criteria. Here's just a few:

Jewish War Veterans of America

The Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund

The Jeanette Rankin Foundation Scholarship Program (for women)

Patsy Takemoto Mink Education Foundation for Low-Income Women and Children

The R.O.S.E. Scholarship (domestic violence victims)

AAMN (American Assembly of Male Nurses) ...which provides scholarship to men who wish to enter the field of nursing.

So again, why the focus on scholarships for Black Minorities?

My issue isnt with just blacks, my issue is with programs that use color and race as there criteria. It really is a step back for this country.

So you don't like private scholarships that focus on a specific criteria if that criteria is aimed at the disadvantaged or underrepresented? (Like men wanting to get into nursing)

Private organizations I have no issues with, Its there money and they should be able to do with it as they please. I wouldnt donate any money to these organizations.

So at the football game today someone asks me where my accent is from, I said South Africa, the person goes: "Oh, so you're African-American now?"

That was hilarious, got me thinking, hell yes! I guess I am, I was actually born in Africa so I definetely have the right to call myself African-American, more so than anyone not born there who call themselves AA.

Bing!. I have always found it funny that people here who have not stepped foot in a continent in six to seven generations call themselves Africans.

Do you get to apply for Affirmative Actions and other benefits? Or does being cough cough white exclude you?

Hell no. It's just too convenient to use historical events to get your way. As I said in another thread, it does say something that certain people in ghettos have not advanced an inch in forty years. Yet migrants come here with nothing, with many not even speaking English, and build something for themselves. Furthermore, are law abiding normal people in their community.

Blacks continue to be discriminated against because of the color of their skin. I don't why you'd want to remove the historical context of that. Are you looking forward to a date when the Holocaust will be forgotten? Or how the Native Americans were dealt with? Does history ever matter?

Sorry dude but it's Caucasian that are now being discriminated against. Just because I am white does not mean my ancestors were slave drivers. Actually, less than 4% of white Americans owned slaved, yet we are all automatically responsible for it.

Every race is subject to discrimination at one point or another, but affirmative action, quotas, etc are nothing but discrimination at its finest.

It's implying that black people NEED help in succeeding in the world. Perhaps you're the discriminatory one to think that they do, but I think in 2010, with a black president, every race is capable and one doesn't need to be handicapped in order for the other to excel.

Scholarships that are awarded to minorities do so to with the intent of helping the disadvantaged, who might otherwise not have the opportunity. The United Negro College Fund, for example. These are private institutions, many of whom are funded from generous outside donors who are aware of their intent.

There are scholarships for children of war veterans, that only cater to them. Are they making an excuse for them?

Yes...because they are underrepresented in the field. That's how these programs work and that is their purpose. So if by chance, you happened to be underrepresented in a field that you wanted to pursue, there may be an organization willing to help you.

Of course, unlike your extensive experience up in Washington state, with 4% (aka almost zero) being of black decent. At least 56% of folks in the DC are African American, which means my experience will be a hell of a lot different to that of folks with 4%.

Is that how you guys see the majority of black people in America? Just pathetic people who stick their hands out for the crumbs off the white man's table and endless demands to be treated better than white people?

I do think there is room to update and modernise affirmative action programs, but this attitude that this is how black people are is really mind numbing.

Um, are you for real BY? Mexicans were treated like ###### in California with USC's who happened to 'look mexican' being deported like cattle in 'ethnic cleansing' roundups.
