because you have a chance to have some financial security and then join the priesthood, besides as a rich man he could help so many more in his priesthood

Priests take a vow of poverty. He perhaps could give his money away to his family or charity but choosing to not engage for a few years in professional sports -- a life that often causes one to be surrounded by debauchery - isn't necessarily a mistake. Besides, he will have years of studying ahead of him before being ordained.

Hope this guy doesn't have pedophile or homosexual tendencies. Seems to be the kind of guys that are called or attracted to it.

You know, I always find myself amused by people who have this attitude. I will not pretend the Catholic Church hasn't been rocked by this scandal, because clearly it has. But of the thousands of priests in the world who do good and who ARE good, why do people people assume that all priests are homosexual and/or pedophiles? BTW, it's not just Catholic priests who have been involved in some of these scandals, it's just more publicized and as well, the vow of celibacy is often seen as a reason for it.

Regardless, it's an uncalled for comment.

Choosing to devote your life to God doesn't equate being a homosexual or a pedophile.

I don't understand why people can't believe a young man would want to choose that life or that it is a mistake to choose it over riches.

Often? So being a sports person is necessarily choosing to live a sinful life? What a wierd opinion.

FFS back at you. You essentially described the lives of sports persons as debauched or how would being a sports person require one to be surrounded by debauchery? No matter the detail, that's your inference, that the 'sporting environment' is more sinful than ordinary life - or why say it at all?

I think that's a wierd thing to believe. That there are some sports persons who do, very publically, behave self centeredly is not in dispute, but I would be very surprised if that was the norm.
