Just like regular ole power company in 2009 generates X amount of jobs... there is no reason to think that futuristic new power company won't be doing the same later on.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

If you read that Dow Chemical roof solar shingle paper above, they claim these shingles will be manufactured in Michigan. At one time the USA was the greatest manufacturing country in the world. The Japanese called us the sleeping giant, same thing today, except for the giant. Just watch our companies go one by one and our economy go down. Do have a railroad pocket watch made in 1933 in Joliet IL, the quality is fantastic and it still ticks. Also a Toastmaster toaster and a waffle maker made in 1935, again super quality and both work today as they did when new. Have to say that Britain was ahead of us in quality electronic components postwar, but they also went to hell. And our trade deficits to Asian countries are killing us with bucks leaving this country the IRS cannot tax. We aren't getting any bargains, congress should wake up, they are the ones that are sleeping.

True, but we only need so much energy, so the jobs gained at the futuristic new power company

will be offset by jobs lost at the regular old power company, no?

I think our addiction to electron-sucking consumer devices will only increase in volume on a population basis. There will always be a need for more power as the population consumes more devices. At the minimum I think the net movement of energy jobs would be 0, but I also foresee some net growth throughout more diversification of these power sources and production.
