Hi, All!

I entered the U.S. on my K-1 visa last month. My husband and I had our civil ceremony (with plans to have our true wedding celebration in a few months). We completed the AOS application and recently sent it in.

Included in the AOS app was my form for a work permit. Is this the application for a Social Security Number? Is there some other form I'm missing? I'd love to be able to work as soon as possible.

I'd appreciate any of your help!

Thanks!

Cristina,

The I765/EAD form is for work authorization - it is not the same thing as getting a social security number, that is applied for separately at the SSA. There is a guide for this Step-by-Step Guide to getting a Social Security Number (SSN) . Getting a social security card doesn't give you permission to work (that is what the EAD is for) but you will need the SS# for when you do get work authorization so you may as well apply for one now (takes a couple of weeks usually).
