I thought you were against mandatory ID? I am, in all instances.

I am. State ID cards are not mandatory.

I have no problem with the requirement that people who register to vote prove they are citizens.

In that case, they are mandatory...

Why? For starters, voting is not mandatory. But even if it was, voters were asked to provide

proof of citizenship - any proof - not necessarily a state ID card.

Presumably if I could find a couple of people to vouch for me, that would be all that's required?

Picture ID is the rub. Not everyone wants to subscribe to that, and why should such a person be denied voter rights? It does not wash with me and nor does the disproportionate focus on minorities for verification.

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

It's not like illegals will disappear in a puff of smoke if such measures are put in place, and I rather doubt the majority of illegals subscribe to this fanciful notion that they automatically a) vote and B) vote for Democrats. I suspect that they rarely attempt to vote. This is yet more fanciful ####### designed to alienate and divide. Again, who are the real neo nazis?

The list is pretty proscribed. If you don't have one of these, you can cast a provisional ballot, but you're still required to provide one of those documents to legitimise your vote.

If you don't have a driver's license or ID, don't work for the government and have never travelled outside the US (in other words - you're not likely to own a passport). For low income people - that's not very hard to imagine.

Georgia law requires registered voters to show photo identification in order to vote in person. When you vote in person, you must show one of the following photo IDs:

POLLING LOCATIONS

Voting Basics

Photo ID

Election Day

• A Georgia driver’s license, even if expired

• Any valid state or federal government issued

photo ID, including one issued by the

Department of Driver Services or your Voter

Registrar

• Valid U.S. passport

• Valid employee photo ID from any branch,

department, agency, or entity of the U.S.

Government, this state, or any county, municipality, board, authority or other entity of

this state

• Valid U.S. military photo ID

• Valid tribal photo ID

If you DO NOT have one of these forms of ID, you can receive a FREE Georgia Voter ID card. Just

contact your county registrar’s office or a Department of Driver Services office. For more information, call 1-877-725-9797, or go to www.GaPhotoID.com.

If you do not have a photo ID listed above, you can still vote by provisional ballot. You have two days

after the election to bring the required photo ID to your county registrar’s office in order for your

provisional ballot to be counted.

If you have to vote a provisional ballot because you don’t have one of the forms of Photo ID listed above, you can go to your county voter registration office, get a FREE photo ID and present it within two days after the election and your provisional ballot will be counted.

If you simply forget your Photo ID, and time permits, you can retrieve it, return to the polling place, and

How does one proof citizenship with a state ID? I had a state ID when I was a permanent resident and it didn't change one bit when I completed the naturalization process.

It must differ by state - when I applied for an NJ drivers license (while I was still on the 2 year green card), the license actually had a line on it that said Temporary Immigration Status, with an expiry date that coincided with the expiry of my 2 year green card. Didn't get that when I got my first DL in CA.

Now I'm on the 10 year - and my drivers license doesn't mention immigration at all.

A passport and birth certificate would seem to be the definitive proof of citizenship.

I have an Enhanced Driver's License which does prove you're a citizen.

In fact, you can use it to travel to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Enhanced as in you can put it into a DVDROM and access bonus material?

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Comes with RFID built-in, so can be read remotely - no DVDROM necessary.

I keep it in a shielding insert in my wallet to stop Big Brother from reading it. :P
