Of course, in the UK British farmers were paid to 'set aside' land. Mind you, I think some of this agricultural devastation is going to become a moot point in the not too distant future. Logically, consuming 5 to 6 times more energy to produce something than it can deliver in energy to the consumer is unsustainable.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

An individual can't really be expected to bear the burden of conservation. Public park land is designated as such so that collectively everyone can enjoy the benefit of keeping some land free from most forms of man made intervention.

Ironically, the only man made intervention is the very force preventing individuals from owning public land.

Matt, I think you are being contradictory. How are rules and regulations any different in terms of effecting people's behavior, whether it is household rules or governmental? Obviously, what we value is not going to be shaped by law - you may think that the local speed limit is ridiculous and ignore it, but ultimately, it is your behavior that matters. It's no different in a household. You may not place a whole lot of value on your brother's personal belongings, but if you carelessly ruin or damage his things, your parents punish you.

Forgive me, but I fail to see how a family household with its rules is any different in principal from governmental laws and regulations. Even if you remove the familial emotional connection, the same would apply if you were renting a room in a house full of people.
