Fines are pretty f*cking expensive actually - you're looking at several hundred dollars a pop and points on your license. The difference between NJ and SoCal is that there are fewer cops on the highways in NJ.

Most of it though is due to people not really knowing how to drive - because the driving test isn't much of a challenge.

Aus and UK have nipped speeding in the '#######' by bombarding the cities with cameras.

First you have the random speeding cameras on the side of the road, which take photos of your speeding car. Fine is in the mail.

They also have time lapsed cameras on the highways. So if you get from point A to point C (and so on) in under x time. Fine is in the mail.

Then they also have the new age cameras that take a photo of you speeding and measure your speed, as most likely you speed up to run the red light. Both fines in the mail there too. If you are traveling fast enough, you receive a summons at the same time and have to mail your license in to their DMV.

How do I know about these? I've lost my license a number of times.

 Goddamn invasive repressive police states. I'm never visiting Australia again!

I'd say more like common sense. People's lives are more important than some idiots right to drive poorly.

Furthermore, it is quite common to be stuck traffic for hours, due to idiots having pulled off what six described and as a result causing an accident. DC has the second worst traffic in the country as it is. When something like that happens, you might as well switch off an grab a 500 page book to read.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

No, I don't watch BBC America. I would really like to watch UK domestic online, but they forbid that so I just listen to the radio and read online newspapers.

BBC world is great. A good portion of the channel (content) is integrated with UK affiliate.
