Ron,

I think a truth commission with extending impunity to the previous Administration as well as the CIA would prevent it from being a political witchhunt, meanwhile shedding light on the truth. We can't and won't move forward until all that gets sorted out - whether it's decades from now by historians or by having the Federal Government open its doors to the public, and to the rest of the world. If there is anything we can take from the Bush Administration's Foreign Policy, is to learn never to repeat the same bad choices they made. The legacy of the secrecy will continue until that day when light is shown on the truth of just what happened.

Steve

You mean 'immunity' yes? (not impunity).

My problem with a fact finding commission is that it will divert attention away from other more pressing matters. There's only so much attention span we can expect to get out of a legislative session in Congress. We've got 2 foreign wars, healthcare, immigration, financial regulations, a looming Social Security/Medicare blowup, imploding auto and manufacturing industries - all of which need urgent Congressional attention.

Holding hearings now is just going to inflame the rhetoric and fingerpointing, even if everyone were granted immunity.

In 10 or 20 years from now I think it would be fine to declassify documents under Freedom of Information Act or by a future executive order. But now, today, in this climate, with the problems we've got? I say let's just move on.

Everyone of us who cares to know who and what Karl Rove, ####### Cheney, Don Rumsfeld, Condi Rice, Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, Alberto Gonzales, John Ashcroft did during those years, knows. In broad strokes we already know. So what's the point of hashing this out now?

I don't agree with you about "The legacy of the secrecy will continue until that day when light is shown on the truth of just what happened". We are in a different era already. The Justice Department is a very different organization under Eric Holder than it was under Ashcroft/Gonzales. They will not be dismissing en masse US Attorneys across the country on political grounds. And that culture is already permeating through Justice and DHS. It's a new day.

Now, pass over that koolaid, I'm getting a bit thirsty :innocent:
