Wicker: No amnesty push for now

Chad Groening - OneNewsNow - 5/4/2009 4:30:00 AM

A Mississippi senator says with all the problems confronting the American people right now, he seriously doubts Congress is prepared to pass legislation granting amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants.

Recently Senator Charles Schumer (D-New York) held a hearing of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security, and Refugees entitled "Comprehensive Immigration Reform in 2009: Can We Do It and How?" Schumer packed that witness panel mostly with individuals biased in support of amnesty, making it a veritable "who's who" of the open-borders lobby and big business interests who want to import cheap labor.

But Senator Roger Wicker (R-Mississippi) says it will not be easy for Schumer to get an amnesty passed this year.

"I think if Mr. Schumer moves forward with legislation that includes amnesty, he's going to find the American people rise up against it, as they did year before last when it was proposed," Wicker predicts. "I really think the Obama administration is biting off way more than it can chew in terms of the issue -- and immigration reform does not need to be one of these issues that we address in 2009."

Wicker says if the Obama administration really wants to address the immigration issue, it should start by enforcing laws already on the books.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995
