Will the post office forward mail from USCIS?

Hello,

I think I read on this forum somewhere that the post office will not forward mail from USCIS. Is this true?

I filed with VSC in August 2008 and was transferred to CSC in Mar 2009. I am still eagerly waiting for the 10 year GC. My wife and I will be going to California on a temporary assignment for 3 months.

Do I have to do a change of address with USCIS for those three months, and then change it back to my current address when I return home? I don't think I have a choice, if mail forwarding is not an option.

Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Best,

Jin

If I am not mistaken, I think it says on the envelope "not to forward".

Are you keeping your current address when you go on the temp assignment? If you are, then can't you have someone get your mail and forward it to you?

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess I just need someone to check my mail once in a while and keep it while I am away. I thought about doing a "mail hold" at the post office, but the limit on that is 30 days.

You can always call USCIS customer service (800-375-5283) and request an update of your address. Then you can ask if they require it since your not giving up your permanent address.

I would give them a call, just in case, since you are waiting for an application to go through, and you are suppose to update your address within 10 days of the move. From what I have seen, they don't care about temporary addresses (like moving from hotel to hotel as you move), just the final destination.

The AR-11 can be done online (for free), but if your the sponsor, you will have to fill out the I-865.

There is nothing I can see that specifies the length of the temporary move - so better to CYA then to not..
