What do you think "the masses" enjoy?

I thought you had some expertise in marketing demographics? I'd think you'd know more about your own job than I would. The masses enjoy bread and circuses. Now that translates to contemporary public spectacles of watching 20 somethings on American Idle and eating whatever's on the dollar menu at McDonald's. That's not an exhaustive list.

I'm not asking because I don't know - I'm asking because you said that my tastes differ from "the masses", to which I asked YOU what YOU THINK "the masses" enjoy.

You buy books that you think people will want to buy based on past purchasing trends. There's nothing irrational about it.

Where's the irony?

I was just speculating the authors themselves may not be rational in writing a book and get pissed because you won't buy it despite their protests that it's a work of art drenched in the sweat squeezed from their very souls.

Some are like that - but there's a bit more to it than simply writing a manuscript and submitting it for publication.

For one thing - established authors are locked into multiple-book contracts (translation: its inordinately difficult to get published as a new writer, without being related to someone or without some endorsement from an established author).

Second, the vast majority of published books were not submitted on-spec, but are commissioned works (i.e. a commissioning editor spots a gap in the market and contracts someone to write it).

No kidding Sherlock. If this wasn't the case, there wouldn't be any necessity to 'screen' the manuscripts submitted, everything would get published.

However, I am curious where you think you are going with this and why you are pursuing it. I am guessing it is some attempt to suggest that PD is piss poor at his job, but how you work that out from anything he has posted in this thread is beyond rational.

Just that a man who reads other's works for a living might also have some insight based on the killer's fax to speculate on motives. That skill doesn't translate and 6 ain't a FBI profiler. It doesn't mean that 6 is incompetent but he's a man who knows his limitations.

It seems somehow inappropriate in a thread about a mass murder.

...because manuscripts and faxed notes involve the written word?

Whether you know, don't know, or simply guess at what motivated the man to snap - I don't think anyone can really imagine what its like to be under the sort of pressure where you feel that killing yourself and your family is not only a viable option, but the only one.

Perhaps you have some understanding of that level of desperation/depression - I can't say that I do, and I suspect a fair few others can't either.

In other words there is no possible correlation between what PD does and people who attempt to solve crimes. Quite.

Lets be nice to each other.

We really cant tell what drove him to such desperation as to think mass murder or sucide killing of his entire family was the way out, but i know he must have been really sick/disturbed, as truely he didnt even give his family time or a chance to adjust judging from when he was fired to the time he commited this terrible act, to try to adjust.... Its truely a sad story. Telling a depressed person to go blow his brains off wasnt a good advice but i guess the guy knows that now, i'm sure he'll carry the guilt for a long, long time, thats why its always wise to choose words carefully.

I guess he just snapped!

Why are you torturing me with your usual circular logic? I gave you sample answer on what the people want and you demand more and more. You said you had to know something about marketing demographics and you're asking an anonymous poster with no specialized knowledge in the field for advice?

Cool, now we're getting down to business. So as I understand it new writers need a "patron" or sorts. That's why you always see some quote from some famous author on the back cover exhort readers to read the book "A MUST READ!", "COMPELLING!" and "I COULDN"T PUT FRIGGIN BOOK DOWN!"

In the second instance you just get a hired gun to write anything that seems new and can make a buck. These nasty crime stories are grist for your mill. They just happened and no one has written anything on it. Of course, it's got to have something different than the usual carnage. I'm more into movies now but I think your fellow New Yorker would make a grisy subject. Check this ####### out. . .

Yes, it is sad. As I suggested before Alien got into a downward spiral of ever decreasing logic. People who do these kinds of things are mentally unstable - probably suffering from some form of severe depression or manic behaviour. The only useful thing that one can try to do to prevent this from happening more often is try make people aware that depression makes a person vulnerable to unpredictable reactions to difficult sitations and ensure they see a Dr frequently to monitor their illness.

Community and extended family support also. I wonder if the mentality of self-sufficiency tied to a sense 'being a man' also plays into it? Both men were gun owners and many gun owners share that notion - to not rely on anyone else for survival. That's got to play into someone's psyche when they are feeling like their back is against the wall and don't have the power within themselves to help their family. It's a sort of perversion of pride.

So I am to understand that I am to blame for what you don't like about for profit publishing?
