i filed my i-130 in frankfurt in october along with all other required documents.

i was given a yellow checklist with a number of documents i was to collect, once collected i was to fax the checklist back to frankfurt.

i did all this.

now i have apparantly to wait on my petition being approved then they will schedule an interview.

does this sound correct?

what is the timeline for this?

That all sounds fine. In London, I wasn't given the checklist until after the I-130 had been approved, but since they asked for it I don't see how it matters what order it goes in. From what I've heard, Frankfurt can be really fast. Do you have any confirmation that the fax was received? If you're confident that they have the checklist, I would give it about four weeks before contacting them again. Good luck! :)
