U.S. Steel Plans 675 Layoffs

U.S. Steel Corp., the U.S.'s largest steelmaker by production, said that it will lay off 675 unionized workers, or about 2% of its staff, due to slackening demand for steel products.

U.S. Steel's layoffs will be spread among plants in Alabama, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Illinois and two facilities in Canada. The layoffs represent a small percentage of the company's 28,000 workers in North America. About 75% of its workforce is unionized.

Freeport McMoRan, the country's largest producer of copper just laid off 600 workers in Arizona today. Another 95 were laid off in New Mexico.

Looks like those in a union are pretty safe. They should now demand the CEO's salary.
