Hi everyone its been a while since I posted here! My fiancee and I are filling in our form for our marriage licence. I was thinking this would be a simple matter, but now I'm confused. She wants to move her now last name to be her new middle name. I guess this is the practice in the Philippines. Will this be allowed here in the USA, since all her immigration forms state her middle name already, can she go and change her middle name AND last name once we are married??? OR,....Should we just stick to the formality in the USA and just have her take my last name and keep the middle name she has now??? Thanks for the help!!!

that is true..

in the philippines, when girls are married, they use their last name as their "new" middle name..

and their husband's last name as her new last name..

like they omit their "old" middle name..

I don't know... I think it was a traditional thing in the US too. My mother was born and raised in the US midwest and she used her maiden name as her new middle name after she was married.

I agree with everyone here.

Every Filipino's "middle name" is always our mother's maiden name. It changes once we got married.

Even a Filipino got her/his middle name, say for example Mary Jane, Jane is not considered to be the middle name.

Problems occurs to unwed mothers that their child have to carry their mother's surname and middle name too. Appears like they are siblings. Really confusing as well.

Now that you two are married...she have to use your surname as her last name and have her previous surname to be the middle name. That's how the arrangement of names for Filipinos works. If she put her previous middle name when she's still single, it will appear that it was her maiden surname..it will be very much confusing.

Filipinos don't really have a middle name even if they have two or three names. We have to use our mother's maiden name and then our father's surname as middle name once we got married.

What is funny is that despite whatever the wife's middle name is or even if it's changed when you get married, the Philippines Consulate in Los Angeles, refuses to put anything else as the middle name except the beneficiary's former last name (when amending the passport to account for the name change). So go ahead and do and follow the Filipino way by making their former last name into their new middle name. It's whatever...

Good luck and cheers,

I'm also Confused this before but it's a matter of preference anyway. Here's my example say your name is Judy V. Santos then got married to John Smith. As married youre name now is Judy V. Smith the Santos is omitted. In my understanding you only have middle name if you have second name like Judy Ann.Ann is the middle name same as second name and maiden name is not middle name only if you have second name. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

in the philippines, if your name is Judy Ann V. Santos..

Ann is your part of your first name, like kinda second name..

V is the middle name.. (mom's maiden name)

and when u marry John Smith..

you're new name will be Judy Ann S. Smith..

so like S = Santos will be the new middle name (maiden name)..

like V (mom's maiden name) is already omitted..

and when u got a child and you wanna name her Vilma..

her name will be Vilma S. Smith..

S = Santos your maiden last name..

so to cut this short, in the philippines..

we use our mom's maiden last name as our middle name..

i hope that dint confuse you guys..

Just imagine if the fiancee have 3 or 4 first names? Like: Maria Kristina Cassandra C. Concepcion, this will probably be more confusing to non filipinos. :innocent:
