Wow, i'm glad you all are here to correct such false information.

To the OP, you got great advice from everyone here except the misguided poster. You are perfectly free to come in and marry your love in the U.S. as long as you do not overstay whatever visa you are coming in on (vwp?). As also mentioned, you will need to know the laws for marriage in the state you will be wed to know what you'll need to get your marriage license. We have a member in our NZ regional thread who did this last year and went back home. She just recently was approved for her spousal visa and will be on her way back here to the U.S. to be with her husband for good very soon. No problems whatsoever!

Your only concern is coming over the border. As pshbrk mentioned, dont offer more than is asked but if you are pushed..do tell the truth. The couple that I spoke of in the NZ thread did mention they were getting married and also had ties to show they were going home and they got over just fine. As i'm sure you know by now, it's not always so easy. Just bring your proof that you will be returning to UNI and whatever else you can think of and hopefully you will be good to go.

If you are considering a spousal visa to the U.S. when your schooling is done you will probably want to start putting together your information now as it can take some time and much of what you will need you will have when you are married in August. ;)

Congratualtions on your wedding! Best wishes.

I am a Canadian citizen who has been dating an American for several years and we just recently got engaged. I have been travelling back and forth a lot (I don't have a visa of any kind). We've set an Aug 2nd date and the wedding is all booked and (mostly) paid for. I haven't bothered with the fiance visa because I have to return to Canada a few weeks after the wedding to start my last year of university. He will be staying in the U.S. for school as well. I thought it would be no big thing to get our marriage license seeing as I am not planning on staying but a friend in a similar situation has told me that I may not be able to get one and, in fact, may be damaging my ability to ever apply for a visa!! I cannot find any information on the web about marrying in the U.S. without intention to apply for residency or citizenship. It seems like an implausible situation (despite the fact that it is true!) and I'm afraid the powers that be will not believe me and let me return to the U.S. for my own wedding!

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sue.

Sue,

You can come here to marry as a visitor. We did have one other member from Canada who had a wedding booked and the border agent had an issue with it (thought there was intent to immigrate). Please read Lily's Story. Bring much evidence that you are to return to Canada after your wedding.

Agree with others regarding ZQT's advice in any of these kinds of threads - its filled with misinformation.

I might also add that the person I am referring to in my previous post has come back into the U.S. for a visit since they have been married. Told the truth, brought ties to home...had a lovely visit with her husband. ;)

you will get great advice with regard to border crossing in the Canadadian regional forum!
