Hi all...been a while since I posted here, but this is always the first place I look for feedback.

Anyway, looooong story short, my husband was granted LPR status last after a mix up with the mail had his case denied because we never got the appointment notice. We made several trips up to Tampa, showing all of our change of address forms, the immigration officer put a canary sheet on the top of the file with all of our current info, and we got that straightened out. We got a new interview date and everything went fine. Shaun was approved and life was good.

So on we go with our lives. Except that, 3 months later, his green card still hadn't arrived. So we called to get an update. And guess what? A couple weeks later, we get a letter stating that his card got 'lost in the mail, please file an I-90 along with the fee, kkthxbai'. :'(

Now...the stamp in his passport has just expired, he still doesn't have his green card and he needs to get a new job.

I've read that you only need to show your ID and SS card for the I-9 and that employers are not allowed to tell you what documents to show.

The only problem with that is this: we just saw that his SS card still says "For work purposes only with DHS authorization". That's our mistake for not getting it updated while the stamp was still valid. With everything else going on in our lives, it slipped our minds until the need presented itself. :(

Anyway, my question is...is it true that you can just show ID/SS card for employment as LPR? Also, I can't seem to get the social security people to answer the phone at the local office. Can anyone speculate whether they'll give him a card that doesn't have that on it with his expired stamp? *sigh*

Such a mess and I know that we've helped create part of it. :\

Well things happen, can't look back and been like should have, could have now.

Even as a permanent resident he still needed to show evidence of LPR status before accepting a job. So even if you worked out the SS Card issue, he still couldn't accept a job now without some evidence of current LPR status: Green Card or Stamp.

Just file for a replacement, it's all you can do for now. Hopefully it doesn't take too long.

The I-9 says that only U.S. Social Security card issued by the Social Security Administration (other than a card stating it is not valid for employment) is accepted. Your card states that it's not valid for employment without DHS authorization (which you don't have at the moment) so you won't be able to use this item to meet the requirements of an I-9.

Even as a permanent resident he still needed to show evidence of LPR status before accepting a job. So even if you worked out the SS Card issue, he still couldn't accept a job now without some evidence of current LPR status: Green Card or Stamp.

That's not true. if you can show an unrestricted social security card and a state issued drivers license, you meet the requirements of the I-9. The employee gets to pick which documents to show the employer. If you don't want to show proof of your status, you don't have to. You do have to give your A# as an LPR, but you don't need to provide a document with that A# on it.

Thanks for all the answers, everyone. I appreciate the insight.

On a related note, I've read that they will re-stamp the passport with another temp I-551 at the biometrics appointment for the replacement card. Does anyone know if this is true?

And if it is true, does anyone know about how long it's taking to get the biometrics appointment after you send in the application?

Thanks again for the advice...we're slowly but surely working through this mess and intend to not let it happen again. :P

Some people have biometrics done at an Application Support Center (ASC) rather than a Local Office if the ASC is closer to their home. I don't think ASCs are able to give stamps, so not everyone will be able to get a stamp after biometrics even if it is standard processing (and I don't know if it is).
