(Not) Keeping Up with Our Parents: Just Being Middle Class Is Becoming out of Reach

There are over 20,000,000 illegal immigrants here. Most working below $6 an hour. I hate it when people fail to accept or acknowledge the effect of this on Americans and their living standard.

Fukcin Mezikans......

You cannot discredit the effect they have had on the country. We are not talking about 50,000 or 500,000 but 20 million here. The excessive number of unskilled workers has lowed wages. Simple as that. And that is not even factoring in the hundreds of billions spent on services for them.

They've had no effect on me. In the end, that's all that matters.

Sorry they do. They many not have an immediate effect on your job but they do suppress overall wages which will affect you.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Yeah, by decreasing the costs of home renovations

its not an excuse mavi its fact. it ain't lookin for a scapegoat either troll. illegals have seriously effected wages in the construction & service industries. hurting american families.

Of course. We are an market economy where goods and services are exchanged from one industry to another. So anyone who says this does not affect me needs to go back to school and study economics 101.

f it were so then American politicians would have done something about it like yesterday, given the political pull of American families vs illegal families. Like, having these industries actually obey labor laws instead of hiring cheap labor.

So stop drooling over Obama and actually ask what he, as a senator, has done to reverse this. What measures has the Democrat controlled congress and house proposed to stop the "illegal" hiring cheap labor?

I think you're getting confused about the topic. We are talking about how it is increasingly more difficult to have the lifestyle our parents had.

....

Our parents didn't have these worries. That's the topic at hand.

But have you acknowledged part of the cause. It is simple really. For every job an illegal immigrant takes, that is one less job for an American.

10,000,000 illegal immigrants working = 10,000,000 less jobs for Americans.

For those 10,000,000 Americans that means that not only do they suffer but their families suffer as well. So 20,000,000 Americans are now living in poverty because of not working. These 20,000,000 are not spending. Therefore not contributing to the economy and are probably on welfare. Which means they are actually draining the countries wealth.

On top of that illegal immigrants send about $24,000,000,000 abroad every year. If this alone was spent in America it would create thousand and thousand of jobs.

This is definitely affecting the living standard of every single middle class and poor American.

Perhaps you should stop fixating on Obama and broaden your focus a little to take in the other main party candidates and ask the same questions of them.

Perhaps you should shut the #### up for once and actually discuss the topic rather than your view of someone else or their post.

You don't think its a little unfair to single out Obama for harsh criticism for having a soft stance on illegal immigrant when none of the major party candidates are doing anything more substantial?

This should answer it:

Kids today are so f*cked up!

Actually this subject of this thread would tie together somewhat with your other contention that things are worse today than they used to be.

As mentioned above its about whether or not its more difficult today to enjoy the same quality of life as preceding generations. Personally I doubt that illegal immigration factors particularly high on that score. There does seem to be a widening gap between the very rich and the very poor - illegal immigration surely does factor in at the bottom of the economic ladder but I rather doubt it affects the middle-class in a substantial way.

All those lawyers and most likely so, their constituencies probably just don't give as much of a damn about such an apparently sucking effect on the economy you're supporting- they're looking at a much larger leech, aka The Vaccuum Cleaner, in office until January 2009.

Talk about being consistently tangential to boot.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Seriously... none of the mainstream party candidates have anything approaching a strong view on enforcement of illegal immigration. Why does Obama get dragged through the $hit for it, and not the others?

Just because apparently.

...and because I lived some of this I remember stuff you don't....

In the 50's and 60's (the generation that's the subject of the article) core America was whining about the black man taking jobs from whites....

Before that they were whining over the Irish, Italians and Germans....

Before that the Chinese....

When you kvetch about the current wave of immigrants (illegal or otherwise) all you do is fall into a stereotype so old you don't even recognize yourself....

The Poor White Man.
