My 2 yrs and 10 months old son had his medical exam at SLEC last April 14(monday) and was given a Tuberculin Test and they were told to go back for the result today(April 16) and the Dr. said If you have ever been exposed to the TB bacteria, your skin will react to the antigens by developing a firm red bump at the site within 2 days. She saw a little red bump on my baby's top layer skin on his inner forearm so she requested a chest x-ray and was told again to go back tomorrow for the result.

But I also know that when someone have been given a TB vaccination. The vaccine contains a bacteria called BCG (bacille Calmette-Guérin) that is closely related to the bacteria that cause TB. That is why this is also may result for a "positive result" for tuberculin test.

I am little worried about the result of his chest x-ray. What if he is positive? Will he undergo some medication? His follow-to join(K-2) and only have until September 13, 2008 to join me here in US.

Anyone with same experience? Please advice........

I'm going to PI in July to pick him up..................

Hi! your kid's xray will probably turn out negative. Most infants usually have a positive PPD because they were given a BCG vaccine which will cross react with the skin test. However, for everyone's safety and for your son's benefit, SLEC has to request an xray to be done. If in case his xray turns out to be primary koch's infection, he would be started with treatment, either a 6 month treatment with 3 antibiotics, or 9 months with one antibiotic. I haven't heard of kids being delayed because of Primary Koch's. My theory on this is because kids can't pass on the disease to their playmates or adults. Matatanda lang ang nakakahawa. So even if your kid is diagnosed with primary koch's, I think he will still get his visa :)

i understand what you are going through. last april 2, i went for a medical with my 4-year-old daughter. when we came back on the third day for her tst result the attending doctor said she was positive and was recommended for chest x-ray. it devastated me.

upon reaching home i surfed the net and found out that most likely she had a false positive tst result due to the bcg she got when she was an infant. or she might have been exposed to tb but it doesn't mean she is sick.

the things i have read on the net washed away my worries. plus the fact that she never showed any symptoms of tb ... none at all.

we came back for the result and when the computer on the ground floor security flashed a big immunization ... i was so relieved!!!

having four shots all at the same time was a different story altogether.
