Brazilian passport

Hello everyone, My wifes Brazilian passport expires in May. She is visiting Brazil this week. Should she try to get a new passport while she is down there, before it expires? or would it be better just to send for one from the Brazilian embassy here in the States at a later date? One concern about getting it while she is there, is that she may not get it back in time for her trip back.

Thanks for reading!

I do not know how long to get new passport in Brazil. I got a new one while living here, it was easy, fast and came by snail mail, without any problem.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks Nessa and LD&RD for your responses. Im a lil delayed in my response, my computer went down for a while. My wife still has yet to depart for Brazil, we had to postpone her trip because of all times, we had car trouble on the way to the airport! I guess February is the month for stuff to break down lol...shes now scheduled to leave in March. Luckily her passport will still be valid.

After reading how easily you both obtained your new passports up here in the states, we'll probably just go that route so she doesnt take any chances of it being delayed down there. But does she need to register her marriage down there or anything when she goes? This may sound crazy and might just be a stupid rumor but we heard from someone that if she doesnt register or something, that she may lose her brazilian citizenship. That seems far fetched but I wonder what he meant? The person we spoke to didnt give many details which makes it pretty suspect but he also said he heard that the rules changed because there were so may brazilians moving to america so it no longer applies. I just wanna know if theres a kernel of truth in there.

And since Brazilians are required to vote in the general election, is it still required of her even though she lives up here? Like some sort of absentee ballot? Thanks in advance for your responses!
