Event Description

Embassy Review : Our experience with the Embassy in Dhaka was a pretty sour one.
First, the Packet 3 was sent to me in the USA. We submitted everything right away and were waiting for our Packet 4 to arrive. It had been about 1.5 months and we had still not heard anything back from the Embassy, at which point, I decided to email them to make sure that everything was received. Good thing I did because they claimed to have already sent Packet 4 and that our visa appointment was in 7 days. They emailed me the forms and application procedures for an Immigrant Visa, which threw me into a panic since I was prepared for a Non Immigrant visa (K-1). I emailed them again and they emailed the correct packet after a few days of making me panic. I scrambled at the last minute to get vacation time from work and fly to Dhaka to attend the interview with my fiance. I wanted to be there especially since K-1's are rare in Bangladesh. The experience at the Embassy was pretty bad. We expected high security and grumpy officials, but what we encountered was really infuriating. The Bangladeshi nationals that take the documents initially were some of the worst people I have ever come in contact with. If the goal was to hire incompetent and rude people, they really succeeded in hiring these ladies. They literally yelled at us to produce certain documents, which we gave them quickly. They were rude and treated us as inferiors and showed no consideration or normal decency.
We waiting about 2 hours to be called back for our interview. The officer was a young, American woman, probably around 27. She was more pleasant than the foreign national workers. She took both me and my fiancee in the room at the same time, we gave our oath, and they promptly had me leave the room. They had my fiance in the room for about 45 minutes before calling me in and making him promptly leave. They examined every stamp in my passport (mostly to tourist destinations in Latin America and the Caribbean) and asked me about my profession. After 30 minutes of random questions about my travels, they called my fiance back in. They started to discuss the I-134. They looked ONLY at my previous years tax returns (AGI only, not GI) and transcripts and did not even look at my current employment letter/pay stubs, etc. Since I had been a full-time student previously, my tax returns did not show that I was consistently making a lot of money, so my taxes did not represent my current situation. They asked why I didn't make so much the previous years, and I told them that I was a full-time student and only working part-time, but now I have a full time job and make $X per year (significantly over 125% of poverty level). The officer then gave us a blue sheet which told us to submit another I-134 from a co-sponsor and their 2009 tax transcripts.
We went completely prepared for the interview and really didn't expect to have to get a cosponsor. We left feeling obviously disappointed about not getting the visa, but even worse because of how we were treated.
Rating : Very Poor

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
